Medical information on A-TPO

A -TPO is an autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase in blood. It is used as an aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease, confirmation and treatment monitoring of a range of illness relating to the thyroid gland. However the magnitude of the antibodies does not correlate with the clinical activity of the disease. Initially elevated titers can become negative after lengthy period of illness or during remission.

High A-TPO are found in:

  • 73% of subclinical hypothyroid patient. Ind J Clin Biochem 2008; 23 (3) 279-282.
  • It would predict a higher risk of developing overt hypothroidism . Ann Clin Biochem 2004; 41; 197-200.
  • 90% of patients with chronic Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
  • 70% of patients with Graves disease.
  • 5-10% of women with post partum thyroiditis.
