Thyrotropin (TSH ) receptor antibodies are a class of thyroid autoantibodies directed against TSH receptor protein, a protein primarily found on thyroid cells. They have a stimulating effect on the synthesis of the liberation of thyroid hormone.

Clinical relevance of the Test :

Thyrotropin receptor antibodies are increased in :
1. Graves’ disease
2. Atropic thyroiditis
3. Post partum autoimmune thyroid disease
4. Neonatal Graves’s disease
5. Transient neonatal hypothyroidism

The test may also help distinguish Graves’ disease from hyperthyroidism caused by toxic nodular goiter. Another indication remains the assessment of pregnant women who have Graves’ disease in order to determine the likely risk of neonatal thyrotoxicosis.
